Charge framed against DGHS driver Malek over arms case

A Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against Abdul Malek, a driver of the Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS), in a case filed over possessing illegal firearms and ammunitions in September last year. With framing charges, trial against him began.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Special Tribunal-1 of Dhaka passed the order for framing charges against Malek on Thursday.
The tribunal fixed April 5, 6, 7 and 8 for recording the depositions of the witnesses in the case. On the occasion, Malek was produced in the court.
Abdul Mannan, lawyer for Malek, sought his acquittal while Additional Public Prosecutor Taposh Kumar Pal, representing the state, pleaded for framing charges against him
during the hearing yesterday.
Hearing the submissions of sides, Judge KM Emrul Kayesh fixed date for recording depositions of the witnesses, after framing charges in the case.
Earlier on February 14, the same court accepted the charge sheet against Malek for his alleged involvement in dealing illegal firearms and ammunitions.
The following day, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) filed two cases against DGHS driver Abdul Malek with Turag Police Station, under the Arms and Special Power Act.
On September 21 last year, RAB arrested Malek, 63, in Dhaka’s Kamarpara area for his alleged involvement in various criminal activities. They recovered a foreign made pistol, a magazine, five bullets, and counterfeit notes worth Tk1.50 lakh from his possession.
