Defamation case: Charge framed against Anwar

Court Correspondent :A Dhaka court on Wednesday framed charges against BNP Standing Committee member MK Anwar in a defamation case.Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Masud Sheikh passed the order in presence of the BNP leader after hearing. He pleaded not guilty in the case.Swechchasebak League leader Debashish Biswas filed the case on May 7 last year. The court also fixed July 27 for recording the depositions of the witnesses in the case. MK Anwar asked for clearing him of the charges but the court turned down his plea and ordered framing of charges. Shops near Baitul Mukarram were set on fire during violence at a rally organised by Hifazat-e-Islami on May 5 last year. Many copies of the holy Quran were burnt in the fire.Anwar at a press conference on May 6 claimed the Hifazat leaders did not carry out the attack but it was engineered by the handiwork of the Swechchasebak League leader. Biswas filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court the following day.The court took cognisance of the case and issued arrest warrant against the BNP leader.
