Staff Reporter :
If there is no change in the transport sector’s leadership, there will be no remission of road accidents across the country, said Elias Kanchan, Chairman of the Nirapod Sharok Chai (Nischa) movement.
He expressed this concern in response to a question from reporters at a press conference on the occasion of ‘Presentation of Road Accident Statistics for 2021’ at the National Press Club in the capital on Saturday (January 8).
Elias Kanchan said that despite repeated requests, the data center on road accidents in the country is not being set up.
So, no one is able to give accurate statistics of road accidents. But we are trying to make it. At this time, a number of recommendations were made to control road accidents across the country. These are: taking of urgent action regarding the implementation of the Road Transport Act, 2018, to implement as soon as possible the 111 recommendations submitted by the both 6-point and 11-point task forces directed by the Prime Minister.
At the same time, in order to restore order on the highways, a high level monitoring cell has to be formed with modern equipment and all aspects of the highway through CCTV cameras under the joint supervision of the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Elias Kanchan said, “The announcement made to include road accident prevention in the school curriculum must be implemented very soon.
It is important to fully implement the plan taken by Dhaka Route Franchise. This will diminish the number of traffic jams and accidents. At the same time disobeying traffic signals, parking cars everywhere, picking up and dropping passengers at certain places, overtaking, reversing and reckless driving, loading extra passengers and goods, carrying passengers on the roof of the vehicles, the tendency to use over bridges or underpasses or zebra crossings should be strictly controlled by law enforcement agencies.
He said that through the ‘SEIF’ project adopted by the government, the process of training 1,410 driver trainers has started. Training to 696 people has already been completed. Among them, Safe Roads is working as a partner in the implementation of this program. The training activities of the remaining 714 people will be completed by June this year. Hopefully, under this program, steps have been taken for 12 and 24 days training workshops for upgrading three lakh drivers.
In a written statement, Ilyas Kanchan said, “Our organization wants safe roads for human welfare as well as road accident prevention has been carrying out various activities with utmost sincerity.
