Deputy Minister for Water Resources A M Enamul Huque Shamim MP has said, at any costs, Chandpur will be protected from the fury and erosion by the Meghna. After visiting the eroded areas at Puranbazar Horishava area and the adjoining areas threatened by erosion , he told this to a gathering of people present beside the erosion site at Puranbazar Horishava in Chandpur today, Monday around noon. Earlier, he was accompanied by the central leader Sujit Roy Nandi, Water Development Board high officials, Chandpur District AL’s General Secretary Abu Nayeem Patwary Dulal, and Acting DC Shaokat Osman.
Enamul Huque Shamim has said, a mega project involving an amount of taka 11 hundred crores has already been taken up by the Government in order to protect Chandpur and Haimchar Upazilas from the curse of erosion by the Meghna. After official approval of this project in the next meeting of ECNEC, the town protection work will start this current fiscal. If necessary and if this fund falls short, the allocated amount for the project would be increased to 1500 crores to complete the works-he emphatically said.
The locals and affected people demanded of the Minister to have this protection work completed by the army personnel so that the town protection work is done fairly, smoothly and also permanently. He assured them that he would personally convey this message and demand of the people to the Prime Minister.

The Minister has assured that now, each of the erosion affected families here will be provided with six thousand taka cash and two bunds of CI sheets to rebuild their houses. DC (Acting) Shaokat Osman has told the New Nation , so far, as per record of the Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Office, eleven families have been badly affected by the sudden erosion by the Meghna since 9 pm on Friday. But there are many other families, also affected by this erosion-said various sources and the local Municipal Councilor Md Ali Majhi.
Meanwhile , 5000 geo textile sand filled- bags have been dumped into the vulnerable site to stop erosion. Contacted, Chandpur Water Development Board’s Engineer Ashrafuzzaman Khan has disclosed to this correspondent that ‘ five hundred metres areas of the Town Protection Bundh at Puranbazar of Chandpur town are in extreme risk condition here and there and under threat of erosion by the mighty river Meghna’.
