Chandpur Correspondent :
The lone Chandpur Rly Hospital and Maternity Clinic near Chandpur Rly Station in the district town, massively ravaged by the super cyclone Sidr on the fateful night on 15 November, 2007, has been lying abandoned and unrepaired for the last 11 years.
As a result, no staffs of the Railway dept nor their family members, nor even the retired staffs are getting medi- care facilities here. They are being deprived of getting proper medi care facilities on time in times of emergency. The women, elderly people and children are the worst sufferers. . They have to avail the medi -care facilities by the private medical practitioners at a high rate in Chandpur town which they can hardly afford these days. Often they have to go to Laksham – which is 50 kilometres away from Chandpur Sadar – alleged the Railway staffs. This takes their whole day time.
Contacted, the same views were ventilated by a few retired Railway staffs also.
There are some 500 Railway officers and staffs working in Chandpur Railway zone-said District Railway Sramik League President Mahbubur Rahman adding that time and again we informed the higher authorities concerned about this vital matter and also about the deplorable condition of the Rly Hospital but to no effect as yet.
As the hospital structures and adjacent trees were blown away by the Sidr, the remaining structures of the hospital are being stolen away by urchins and street children day by day and the rest are lying abandoned. That’s why, the vagabonds and drug addicts find this place a safe heaven to use it as their rendezvous and happy haunting ground for taking drugs after the sun set’-allege the locals.
The northern and eastern sides of the hospital premises are also being devoured by a big water body where tilapia fish and other varieties of fish cultivation are going on and the mono-sex tilapia fish eat up the soils of slopes along the bank of the hospital premises. Unnecessary plants have also grown up around for lack of proper care giving chance for growing up reptiles and poisonous snakes. The approach road to the hospital is very narrow too for lack of proper repair over the years.
When asked, a sixty -year- old woman of the area sitting on the premises of the damaged hospital building told this correspondent that ‘drug addicts use the hospital premises every day as their drug taking spot just after the sun- set’. The neighbours also ventilated the same complaints.
Contacted, some veteran Railway staffs of Chandpur Rly Department- Abdus Salam Sarker,55, Mujibur Rahman ,55, Humayun Kabir, 40,, Rtd staffs- Fatehul Bari ,63,and Shukhranjan Das, 60, and their family members-  Momota Das and others, have told this correspondent that it was a full- fledged Railway Hospital and Maternity Clinic. We used to medi- care facilities from here on time but the cyclone Sidr damaged it long ago and since then, the activities of the hospital are stalled. Now we , the railway staffs, have to go to Laksham -which is time killing and far away, 50 kilometres away, from Chandpur to get treatment and medicines. Many Railway staffs have said, ‘We need the Railway Hospital in Chandpur to get medi- care facilities on time’. We urge upon the Railway authorities to take early steps in this regard.
