Chanchal Chowdhury, who was applauded for his portrayal of Ayna in Aynabaji last year, is geared up to play the role of Misir Ali, one of the greatest characters in Bangla literature created by the iconic writer Humayun Ahmed, for an upcoming film Debi. Jaya Ahsan will play an important role in the film.
Chanchal teams up with the two time National Film Award winner Jaya Ahsan for the first time in a big screen venture. Jaya is to play the role of Ranu in the film, a woman with paranormal powers. Jaya’s film production outfit C-te Cinema is producing the film.
Animesh Aich, actor and filmmaker, is confirmed to play Anis, Ranu’s husband, in the film which also casts Shabnam Faria and Iresh Zaker in major roles.
Anam Biswas, the scriptwriter of Aynabaji, who also wrote Debi’s screenplay and dialouge, will direct the film. Biswas has worked as the creative director at Asiatic JWT and Grey Dhaka before starting his career as a TV commercial director. Kamrul Hasan Khosru, the cinematographer of Monpura, will work behind the camera for the film.
Based on the influential writer’s novel of the same name, the film was awarded with the National Filmmaking Grant.
Talking about the adaptation from book to film, Jaya Ahsan told Bangla Tribune that, “After obtaining permission from the family members of the writer and presented with the National Filmmaking Grant, we continued the process of making the film.”
“We are investing all our effort to keep the essence of Humayun Ahmed’s novel intact in film,” she added.
The book Debi – the first of Misir Ali series, is considered one of the best books of the late writer and a treat to the readers who appreciate mysteries and paranormal fiction. Misir Ali, a fictional part-time professor of Psychology at the University of Dhaka, is not a professional psychiatrist, but people come to him for psychiatric advice. He has a knack for solving mysteries. The novel’s many twists and turns along with Misir Ali’s extensive knowledge in parapsychology leave readers awed.
The film production will start from March 18 at several locations in the country including Dhaka and Dinajpur.
