A supporter of a union chairman candidate was killed in an attack by miscreants at Joardar Para in Sadar upazila early Friday. Police said 6/7 miscreants swooped on Shahin Ali, 30, a restaurant owner and a supporter of defeated Awami League-backed chairman candidate Motaleb Hossain and stabbed him indiscriminately on his way back home after closing his restaurant around 11 pm, leaving him critically injured.
Later he was rushed to Kushita General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 1 am.
Shahabuddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Kushita Model Police Station, said Shahin was involved in several anti-social activities.
Quoting family members of the deceased, police said Shahin had an enmity with the supporters of newly-elected chairman Siddiqur Rahman over the union parishad election who might have killed him.
As soon as the news of his death spread, Shahin’s supporters swooped into the houses of two supporters of Siddiqur and looted valuables after vadalising those in the dead of night.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
