Centenarian woman freed from jail

Staff Reporter :The centenarian Ohidunnessa was released on Tuesday from the Kashimpur Central Jail after completion of all legal process. Her daughter-in-law and grand children received her at the jail gate. All of them, particularly the century-old lady, became emotional at the sight of each other, with tears rolling down their cheeks.Ohidunnessa got freedom after 19 years in jail. She was serving a jail term awarded in a murder case. It came to the notice of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha when he visited the prison on June 29. Being passionate by the grief of this old lady, the Chief Justice ordered to review her case when she appealed for release.The report was published in The New Nation on July 16, mentioning that the century old woman had been passing her days in the dark cell of the jail in ‘manufactured’ case. The jail authority forwarded the appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice ordered her release after reviewing the case.The copy of the her release order reached the Kashimpur Jail on Monday. After the completion of the official formalities, the jail authority released her on Tuesday at around 11:00am. A trial court from Chandpur sentenced Ohidunessa and 10 others of her family in a murder case on May 14, 2000. Her husband and son died in the jail during serving life term. She could not move her alone. Her daughter-in-law helped her to do personal chores.
