Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md. Asaduzzaman Mia on Monday said that to impose censorship on media is illogical for any democratic country.
The reporters should publish the report considering self-responsibility for the sake of people’s interest, not to spread news for the benefit of terrorists or create panic.
He made the comments at a workshop titled “Reporting on Terrorism” organized jointly by Crime Reporters’ Association (CRAB) and DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit in the city’s CIRDAP auditorium.
Asking the TV channels to be more responsible in live telecast, the DMP Commissioner said, “On the issue of militancy, self-censorship is needed. In Sri Lanka, no channel showed the grisly details of the attack and refrained from showing mutilated dead bodies. They put national interest above all and that’s the lesson to learn.”
“We have managed to create an awareness against militancy which many western countries failed to achieve. To unite the people against extremism, the media have played a constructive role,” said the DMP chief.
The main aim of the militants is to create an atmosphere of terror and impose
their ideology on other people and they always look for ways to have their views publicized, said the DMP commissioner adding: “Reporters should be careful to ensure that they do not promote the views of extremists.”
In Bangladesh, radicals are always trying to create an unstable situation but law enforcers are successfully tackling it with support from the media, he added.
