The mobile phone operators are cheating their subscribers by giving different promotional offers and advertisement.
The Directorate of National Consumers Rights Protection (DNCRP) has recently fined Grameenphone (GP) Tk 2.5 lakh for cheating one of its subscribers for offering a promotional package.
Shibly Sadek, a customer of GP filed a complaint with the DNCRP for cheating him, offering various promotional packages on September 29, 2015.
Receiving the petition, the DNCRP held in investigation and published a report where it found the GP guilty of cheating the consumer, said Pronab Kumar Pramanik, Assistant Director of DNCRP.
Finally the DNCRP fined GP Tk 2.5 lakh for the same reason, he said.
In the complaint, Shibly Sadek mentioned that GP sent SMS to him offering a package for purchasing 1 GB internet with 28 days validity. The SMS said that another 2GB will be given as bonus on purchase of the offer.
After purchase of the offer by Shibly Sadek, he was informed that the validity of the offer accounted for seven days from 12:00 am
to 2:00 pm only. Such cheating is totally against the Consumers Protection Act.
Pronab Kumar Pramanik said, GP was fined Tk 2.5 lakh as per Section 44 and 45 DNCRP act.
Sources said, the other mobile operators in the country are cheating millions of people similarly offering different promotional offers through SMS of the users.
The GP has broken its promise about call drops and is sending false SMS to the subscribers. This is nothing but cheating, said Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, General Secretary, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB).
He said, not only Grameenphone, all the mobile operators including the state owned Teletalk, have also cheated their users through different promotional offers.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC) and DNCRP have to build a strong unity against cheating. Fine and other disciplinary action will be taken as soon as possible against the guilty, talking with The New Nation Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan told yesterday.
Dr Shajahan Mahmud, Chairman of BTRC said that BTRC would emphasize on taking action against the false offers. If any one is cheated and suffered by the mobile operators, he might go to the to DNCRP directly, he said.
