Cultural activists of Barishal formed a human chain and held protest rally on Sunday, alleging low-quality of the construction work and demanding speedy handover of the Shilpakala Academy.
Sources said Asadujjaman Noor, the then Culture Minister and lawmaker, laid foundation of Barishal Divisional Shilpakala Academy in 2015 on Bandh Road area of the city.
The construction work is supposed to be completed within 24 months. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Divisional Shilpakala Academy complex at that premises was on February 8, 2018, before completing and handing over the project by the contractor.
Plaster from the ceiling of the auditorium of the building collapsed several times last week of September, acknowledged district cultural officer Hasan Maksud.
He said Barishal Divisional Shilpakala Academy building was supposed to be handed over within June 2017. But the construction work period was extended repeatedly.
State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid visiting the under construction site on December 26, 2019 asked the project officer and the contractor to complete the work within February 28, 2020.
But that instruction was ignored by the concerned contractor and the whole building is lying in abandoned as the contractor stopped their work, he added.
Khorshed Alam, managing director of Infinity Engineering Limited, construction contractor of the project, said due to the corona epidemic construction works are disrupted.
There is also a delay in doing some extra finishing work including decorating outside of the project. The ceiling is being repaired quickly before handing over the project, the contractor said.
