Speaker of the National Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury sent a letter to the Election Commission [EC] on Monday to give a decision about the parliamentary membership of sacked Awami League leader and ex-Minister Abdul Latif Siddique.
“The EC has received a letter about Latif Siddiqui. It’s highly sensitive issue.
The EC will review Siddiqui’s membership in the Parliament. The EC, however, will take final decision about it after scrutinizing the legal aspects,” Legal Wing Joint Secretary of EC Md Shahjahan said.
Confirming the matter, Helal Choudhury, Joint Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat said, “Speaker has sent the letter directly to the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad. The EC received the letter around 3pm.”
Earlier on July 7, the Speaker received a letter from the Awami League about the expulsion of Latif Siddiqui from the ruling party, eight months after taking the decision.
The Awami League terminated the membership Latif Siddiqui from the party on October 24 last year over his demeaning comments about Hajj, Tablighi Jamaat and prime minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in New York programme on September 28.
