Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) is demolishing a multi-storey building of the private University of Science and Technology Chattogram (USTC) built by occupying the canal under Khulshi police station in the city.
The CDA authorities started demolishing the multi-storey building from 10 am yesterday.
CDA’s Special Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Alam is leading the demolition drive, which was carried out with the help of the army and law enforcement agencies.
Ahmed Moinuddin, director and executive engineer of CDA’s waterlogging alleviation project, told media that the multi-storey building, which was constructed by occupying a canal under the waterlogging removal project, is being demolished. He said that despite the approval of the CDA for the construction of the building on their own site, the USTC authorities did not accept the design and constructed the 16-storey building. They occupied about 3,500 square feet of canal space to build the building. In response to a question, he said that in October 2019, USTC was given 90 days time to remove the illegally constructed part . But after 18 months, they did not remove the illegal part. So we are conducting eviction campaign before t he monsoon begins.
