The quota reform movement has further spread all over the country yesterday. Students from public and private universities and other higher educational institutions are massively taking part in the non-violent and peaceful demonstration demanding quick resolution of the problem.
The Prime Minister yesterday told the Parliament that there will no quota system in government job but the students were not convinced till writing this report last evening with a general comment. They want specific commitment within a timeframe for not to be misled by ambiguous comment at the end. Student leaders said they would give their opinion on the PM’s offer this morning.
Student protests continue in Dhaka University campus and other public varsities as they vowed to continue it until demands being fulfilled. VC’s of Dhaka, Khulna and Sylhet Shahjalal University and Jahangirnagar University supported the movement terming quota a wrong system.
Dhaka University Teachers Association also lent support to the movement yesterday although they had opposed it the day before.
Only few members of Muktijhudha Santan Command opposed it gathering at Shahbagh point yesterday.
Meanwhile the city was almost totally paralyzed yesterday as students of private universities laid siege on the streets in front of their institutions blocking way to traffic. They were non-violent but refused to withdraw until the government come with definite proposals to open talks on a broader scale how to reform the quota system.
The Dhaka University campus – the centre of this movement was overcrowded yesterday like the previous days with protesters demanding reform of the system and calling on the authorities to release their fellow students, police arrested on the first day of the massive protest.
Students are making angry reaction as government ministers are blaming students for attacking on the residence of the Vice-Chancellor. They call it a conspiracy against their peaceful movement to be tainted with violence and ransacking the VC’s residence. They fear it is clearly a move to deny bail to the arrested students and divert it to a new direction.
Student leaders wonder why the VC and the government are hastily blaming students for the attack before a judicial inquiry makes its finding. The students are also demanding judicial inquiry and any one with honest intention will wait for the probe report before bluntly blaming students and implicating them in false cases for the attack on the VC’s residence. Even the VC of Dhaka University has not blame the students involved in the movement.
It was seen by every body that the students were most praiseworthy for peaceful movement till police entered the Dhaka University campus and use brutal force against them. Many were arrested and many others were severely injured. A woman Student League leader has been caught torturing women students fighting for their cause.
Deputy Commissioner of Ramna division of Metropolitan Police Maruf Hussain Sardar said they are trying to collect the CCTV footage. He declined to comment on police action in the campus. But the point is that provocative police action on peaceful demonstrators made the situation volatile in the campus and there should be also a probe how and why police entered in the campus and beaten students. Who had authorised them if not the Vice-Chancellor?
But DU Proctor Prof. Gulam Rabbani said to his know ledge police did not enter the campus in the first place. They went there when they learnt about attack on the VC’s residence and had accompanied the Fire Service men. Many believe this should also be investigated to clear the situation.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told the media after the incident that they had the CCTV footage as to who had carried out the attack. But many wonder why these are not being released to the media to publicly identify the criminals.
Latest estimate shows over 300 students were injured all over the country, besides 44 arrests in the capital and at other places.
Our students are our children and all concerned have agreed that their demand is just and deserves immediate consideration.
