Angela Dark, Counselor (Commercial Affairs) of the Canadian High Commission in Bangladesh, met with Mahbubul Alam, President of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at the World Trade Center office on the afternoon of October 24. Vice-President of the Chamber Syed Mohammad Tanvir, Trade Commissioner of the High Commission Kamal Uddin and officials of the Secretariat of the Chamber were present on the occasion.
CCCI Chief Mahbubul Alam said that Canada is one of the top trading partners of Bangladesh. Canada has made a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of this country. He emphasized the importance of liaising with the concerned traders of both the countries to make the import-export trade more cost effective and expressed his interest to work together with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in this regard. Request was also made to increase more investment in Bangladesh.
Noting that about 15 billion in foreign investment is in the process in the Mirsarai Economic Zone, he said it would be possible to produce products using one-stop services, tax holidays and other incentives and young manpower to export to different countries of the world. Chamber Vice-President Syed Mohammad Tanvir emphasized the importance of exchanging visits of sector-based trade delegations to boost bilateral trade and hoped to send a delegation from the Chittagong Chamber by mid-2022. He invited the exhibition of Canadian products at the World Trade Center’s Permanent Exhibition Hall so that these local importers could have a fair idea about these products. Besides, Syed Mohammad Tanvir, vice-president of the chamber, proposed to organize an exhibition to create a market for the product in both the countries.
Counselor Angela Dark said that Bangladesh’s economy is growing very fast. Canadian companies from different Asian countries are interested in setting up industries in Bangladesh.
Therefore, it is very important to establish communication among the concerned. He emphasized on diversification of goods to increase imports and exports of both the countries.
After the exchange of views, the diplomat visited the Permanent Exhibition Hall of the World Trade Center. Chittagong, a release said.
