CCC mayoral candidate begins campaign

The ruling Awami League (AL)-backed mayoral candidate AJM Nasir Uddin today formally started his election campaign through seeking blessings from his mother.
AJM Nasir Uddin, also general secretary of Chittagong city AL, reached Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport on Saturday morning when hundreds of supporters of the party warmly greeted him with garlands and wreaths.
Earlier on Friday evening, Prime Minister and the president of AL Sheikh Hasina, at a meeting between AL central and Chittagong city leaders at Gono Bhaban nominated AJM Nasir Uddin as mayoral candidate in Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls scheduled for April 28.
Then Nasir directly went to his Andarkilla residence and sought blessings from his elderly mother. He also went to the shrine of Hazrat Shah Amanat ® to perform prayers there before he started his first ever big election campaign.
AJM Nasir Uddin told reporters that the AL chief selected him for the CCC mayoral election considering his contributions to the party and reviewing different media reports in last two years. “I have been in politics since I was a school student. I am a leader when I am at a political stage but I become a ordinary man when get down from the dais”, he said adding that he wanted cooperation from all to serve the city dwellers as he did before.
Meanwhile, the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) warned of stern action against any attempt to occupy polling centres during the election.
CMP commissioner Abdul Jalil Mondol in a view exchange meeting at city’s Bakalia area said police administration would not tolerate any kind of muscle power during the election.
“Everybody should abide by law as we want a fair, free and acceptable election without inference of any kind of muscle power”, he added.
He also said police would conduct drives to arrest listed criminals, illegal arms owners and professional criminals.
