The newly-elected Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) AJM Nasir Uddin on Saturday reaffirmed that he would fulfill his pre-election pledges with utmost honesty, sincerity and transparency.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has selected me as mayoral candidate of Chittagong for its development.
She has so far done immense development of Chittagong and now she wants to complete the rest development work through me”, Nasir said seeking support from the city dwellers.
The newly- elected CCC mayor said this while addressing a reception accorded to him at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (CSAIA) on Saturday afternoon
Chittagong Nagarik Committee (CNA) arranged the reception ceremony upon his arrival from Dhaka after being sworn in as mayor.
Addressing the function Nasir said he better knows the problems of Chittagong and would try to solve those on priority basis through discussion with different professional groups.
Earlier, Nasir reached CSAIA in a US-Bangla Airlines flight around 3.50pm from Dhaka. Hundreds of leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) and its front organizations thronged the airport area to accord the newly elected mayor a royal reception.
AL law makers MA Latif, Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury and Didarul Alam, Chittagong North district AL president Nurul Alam, Chittagong South District AL President Muslem Uddin Ahmed, General Secretary Mofizur Rahman, Chittagong City AL leader Ibrahim Chowdhury Babul and Chittagong City AL Law Affairs Secretary Advocate Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury, among others were present at the reception.
Mayor Nasir to wait till July to assume charge
Newly-elected CCC Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin will have to wait until the end of July to assume office even as mayors of the two city corporations in Dhaka have already taken charge.The term of outgoing mayor and councilors had not ended yet, causing the delay in Nasir’s taking charge, a top local government official in Chittagong said
Their term would end on Jul 25, Local Government Division (LGD) Secretary Abdul Maleksources said.
The elections to the Dhaka North, South and Chittagong City Corporations were held on Apr 28.
The mayors and councilor-elects have already taken oath in Dhaka recently. Three city corporations also updated the mayors’ profiles on their websites. All of them were elected with the support of ruling Awami League.
Chief Executive Officer of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Kazi Shafiul Alam told that he had sent a letter to the local government ministry over the matter.
“Steps will be taken as per the directives of the Local Government Division,” he said. Outgoing mayor of Chittagong M Manjur Alam and the councilors joined office on Jul 26, 2010.As Manjur resigned to contest the election, a panel mayor is officiating in his place.
