Anisul Islam Noor :Cattle markets in the city are in bad shape as there is no roof on the head, no fence, and no space for cooking. Meantime, Sunday’s heavy rainfall made the situation adverse. As a result, cattle coming from different parts of the country are wet in rains and dried in sun light, sources said. This should not have been. We thought of adequate arrangements in the cattle markets, said a trader coming from Kushtia.Traders and farmers continue pouring into different makeshift cattle markets in the capital and hope to sell at exorbitant price, taking advantage of small number of overseas cattle, sources said In many a makeshift market, landing spot has been arranged for the cows.. If the cattle are forced to jump from trucks, there are probabilities of injuries, which no cattle trader will welcome. One of the lease holders of Shajahanpur cattle markets said, cattle shed and landing spots will be ready by Monday morning. Buyers are gathering in the markets for knowing price and fixing up suitable cattle, sale will increase gradually, he said.Cattle trader Rahim Uddin from Alampur of Kushtia Sadar said that he came to Balur Math market with his cattle on Saturday morning and found that sheds were still being made. He said that he and his three fellows brought 14 cows spending Tk 23,000 as truck fare, but he had spent Tk 16,000 as transport cost for the same number of cows in the past year. Gabtoli cattle market director Rakib Imran said that plenty of cows had been arriving at the market and hoped that all the sheds would be ready by Monday morning. He said that there would be no crisis of cattle this year as the country had a sufficient stock while some Indian cows had also been arriving. Besides the permanent cattle market at Gabtoli, makeshift cattle markets have been set up at 22 designated places in Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Dhaka district areas.
