Joynal Abedin Khan :
Sales of sacrificial animals suffered in the city on Wednesday due to torrential rains all day long. As a result, most of the cattle markets went under knee-deep water.
An adverse situation has now been prevailing in various cattle markets with mud and waterlogged. The traders are now in a dilemma what to do with their cattle.
Local cattle are dominating almost all the sacrificial animal markets this year, as in Gabtali, Naya Bazar, Mitford, Islampur Bazar Road,
DCC Road, Hazaribagh and Lalbagh.
A small number of overseas cattle are seen in the markets. The local traders have welcomed it. However, about the price, in the afternoon on Wednesday, the price was comparatively higher than the last year’s, but heavy rains after evening contributed to the slight fall of price. The traders were waiting for explosive sale on Thursday, but they are now anxious following submerging of cattle markets. However, the cattle markets are likely to witness the storm of buyers today. In the city’s largest cattle market at Gabtoli on the day, the highest Tk 22 lakh was demanded for an ox, and in Rajshahi it was Tk 13 lakh. Trader Mohammad Ali from Jhenaidah said that he had sold 12 out of the 35 cows he brought at the Gabtoli market. He said, “I hope that the other 23 cows will be also be sold by Friday.”
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday expressed satisfaction at the market situation. He said that the government would do everything for the security of both buyers and sellers.
The minister said it while visiting the Gabtoli area Wednesday. Replying to the queries of journalists, the Minister further said: “People’s security is the main concern of the government and this time we have taken strict measures in this regard.”
