Some 1400 casual employees of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) on Tuesday withdrew the day-long sit-in programme after three hours following an assurance of the authority concerned.
Member (Administration) of CAAB AKM Shahidur Rahman assured the agitating employees of regularising their job in phases. “In the first phase, a total of 34 employees will be regularized on Thursday,” he said.
The employees, however, threatened to go for tough movement if their demand for service regularization is not met by June 30.
As part of their programmes, the CAAB employees began their sit-in programme at 10:00am in front of the CAAB headquarters demanding immediate regularization of their jobs. All kinds of activities of the Civil Aviation Authority remained suspended at that time.
Later in a press briefing at CAAB Headquarters, Shahidur Rahman said that all casual employees would be regularized in three phases according to last year’s March 13 Supreme Court verdict.
“In the first phase, a total of 34 employees will be regularised on Thursday. But the employees who face charges or quit job, they will not be eligible,” he told the briefing.
However, Shahidur said the CAAB has not yet prepared the employees’ list in order to regularize them.
“A total of 3700 staffs, including officers and employees, are now working with CAAB. Besides, we have sent a proposal with a requirement of manpower of 5011 to the Public Administration Ministry,” he said.
“We about 1400 casual employees have been working with the CAAB since long 20 to 25 years. But none of us has yet been made permanent. It is inhuman. It can’t be continued,” CAAB Employees Welfare Association President Mohammad Shahidullah said on Tuesday.
He accused the CAAB of keeping their problems alive defying the Supreme Court’s verdict on March 13 last year.
“The Supreme Court in its verdict asked the CAAB to regularise all casual employees according to their seniority. Though one year and four months have already elapsed, the CAAB has not regularised their jobs yet,” Shahidullah said.
Maolana Akteruzzaman, Imam of CAAB mosque, said the CAAB pays Tk 300 to skilled workers and 275 to unskilled workers per day.
“Out of 30 days, the CAAB takes away one day’s wage. It is inhuman. It is quite impossible for a person to keep survive his family with such a little money,” he said.
