Cases filed against 49 BNP men

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) yesterday filed two separate cases against 49 BNP men with Kotwali thana in connection with Thursday’s clash in front of party office following a court verdict that sentenced five years jail to BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in a graft case.
Jashim Uddin, Officer in Charge of Kotwali thana, told that one of the cases was filed under Anti-Terrorism Act while another for attacking police in front BNP Nasimon Bhaban office.
Dr Shahdat Hossain, President of Chittagong City Unit BNP, is among the accused.
At least 16 persons, including five police personal, were injured in a clash at party office Nasiman Bhaban in the city’s Kazir Dewri area centering Khaleda’s verdict yesterday.
Kotwali thana police arrested 15 BNP activities, including Dr Shahdat, in this connection.
34 BNP, Jamaat men held : Police in special drives arrested 34 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-e Islami from different upazilas of the district early Friday.
Rezaur Masud, Additional Superintendent of Police, Chittagong , said police arrested one each from Sitakundo, Rangunia, Anwara, Chandanaish upazila, two each from Mirsharai and Jorarganj upazilas and three each from Raozan and Bhujpur upazilas and four from Lohagara and six from Patiya.
Among the arrestees, there were 31 BNP men and three Jamaat men, said the police official.
CU student detained for ‘Tahrir link’: The Chittagong University authorities handed one of its students over to police on Thursday for his alleged involvement with Hizb-ut Tahrir.
Earlier in the day, several activists of a student organisation beat the student of philosophy and handed him over to the authorities, said an assistant proctor.
Documents related to the banned outfit were found in his cell phone, the official said.
The student was seen pasting the group’s posters earlier in a CU shuttle train, he quoted several students as saying. Police said the detainee will be interrogated.
