Case transfer to DB Police clueless about killers

Joynal Abedin Khan :Panic is prevailing among the people as the murder of blogger Avijit Roy took place in front of the law enforcers, adjacent to a police check-post near Shahbagh Police Station in the city on Thursday night.The spot of the incident was under three-tier security of the law enforcers since the beginning of themonth-long Amar Ekushey Book Fair at Bangla Academy and Shahrawardy Udyan. Bangla Academy authorities had installed 40 close circuit television (CCTV) cameras to ensure security for the Amar Ekushey Book Fair as a large number of people gathered there every day. Police also set up six check-posts in the book fair area to ensue the law and order considering public interest. Meanwhile, the Police are yet to arrest anyone in this regard though protesters at a rally on Friday gave a 24-hour ultimatum to nab the culprits. Even, the law enforcers also could not find out any clue and track any person or organization in connection with the gruesome murder of Avijit though Ansar Bangla-7 and two other militant organizations have claimed the responsibility of the murder in several blogs on Friday.People of all walk of lives, including progressive writers and claimed that they felt lack of security across the country after the sensational murder of Avijit at Shahbagh. “Why police did not arrest the culprits immediately after the incident and where will we go for our security?” Ajoy Roy, father of Avijit told the New Nation on Saturday.  The murder case has been handed over to the Detective Branch (DB), said Mohammad Arafat, Assistant Commissioner of the Detective Branch, Ramna zone. Imran H Sarkar, spokesman of Gonojagoron Mancha, on Saturday said that the Avijit was killed only because none of the previous murders have been tried. The government cannot avoid its responsibility as it has failed to try similar crimes before, he said.A witness Shahjalal Mia said there were seven policemen on-duty at the police barricade and at the entrance of the Suhrawardy Udyan. Moreover, the place of incident was just 25 yards away. Contacted, SM Shibly Noman, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Ramna zone yesterday said, “Our officials, divided into separate groups, have started investigating into the incident. We hope to hunt down and arrest the attackers soon.”Shahbagh Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sirajul Islam said: “Police were far from the spot. When they heard about the incident they rushed to the spot.
