A case has been filed against veteran journalist Moazzem Hossain Nannu’s wife Shahina Hossain Pallabi for allegedly killing her husband.
Deceased Nannu’s brother Md Nazrul Islam Khakon filed the murder case with Badda police station around 2pm on Monday.
Pallabi’s mother Shanta Parvez and some unnamed others are also among the accused, said Badda Police OC Md Parvez Islam.
“They have just filed the case. We will now start investigation and legal procedures,” the OC added.
According to the case statement, Nazrul claims Pallabi and her mother were both in the house when Nannu caught fire, but neither did anything to help him. The neighbour took Nannu to the hospital and Pallabi went there much later.
He also claims Nannu’s brother Iqbal Hossain Bablu and nephew Sajjad Hossain Tipu attempted to visit Nannu at the hospital, but Pallabi and an office colleague, who is reportedly a CEO, did not allow them to do so.
After Nannu died, Pallabi did not allow anyone to see the body and took it back to her home village in Jessore without informing anyone. The body was buried there without an autopsy with the help of her CEO friend, according to Nazrul’s statement.
He accuses Pallabi, her mother and some unidentified others of intentionally setting the fire that led to Nannu’s death.
Nazrul said he had filed the case a little late as the events surrounding his brother’s death seemed suspicious to him when he heard about the incident.
Earlier, the Gulshan Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) imposed a travel ban on Nannu’s wife Shahina Hossain Pallabi while his mysterious death is being investigated.
The Daily Jugantor Chief Crime Reporter Moazzem Hossain Nannu, 53, breathed his last on June 13 at around 8:20am at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute. He had sustained burn injuries on 60% of his body in a fire at his home in Dhaka’s Aftabnagar on June 12.
On January 2, Nannu’s son Shapnil Ahmed Piash, 24, also died in a fire in the same room. The fire was reportedly caused by a short circuit.
