Negligence of treatment: Case filed against 50 SBMCH doctors

A case has been lodged on Tuesday with Barisal metropolitan magistrate court against 50 doctors and interns, including 4 by-name, of Barisal Sher- e- Bangla Medical College Hospital over alleged death of patient in negligence of treatment and injuring the protesting attendants of the patient.
Julia Begum, wife of the dead patient Rezaul Karim from Badarpur village under Sadar upazila of Patuakhali, as complainant lodged the case under sections 304/34, 354, 323,379 of penal code.
Md. Wahiduzzaman Shikdar, magistrate of the court accepting the petition ordered Barisal Kotwali police station officer in charge to take legal action registering the case on Tuesday afternoon.
The by-name accused doctors were Dr. Shahidul Islam, Dr. Mosharraf Hossain, Dr. Moniruzzaman Shahin, Dr. Alal Mahmud, assistant registers and physicians of the orthopedics department.
Mentionable 6 including 2 doctors injured and medical services hampered for more than three hours on May 18 morning following death of Rezaul Karim, 31, a rental motorcycle driver, admitted at orthopedics department of SBMCH on May 14 after injured in collision with a tractor on road on May 13 night and died there on May 18 morning.
No doctor attended the patient when his condition was deteriorating at night and after pushing an injection in morning, the patient expired within few minutes and when the relatives of the expired patient asked the doctors on duty about the cause of death the doctors calling interns attacked the protesting relatives of the patient with sticks, cricket stamps, the complainant alleged.
Later police rushed to the spot rescued the relatives of the patient and recovered the dead body from the grips of the doctors, the complainant told.
However after post mortem report it was found that the patient was died from head injury not from injury on his leg and it also proved that the patient was not only given proper treatment, but the doctors also failed to diagnose the injury, it was alleged in the case.
On other hand after the incident a general diary was lodged on behalf of the doctors on May 18 with Barisal Kotwali police station seeking safety and security of them during performing duty at the hospital.
Dr. Moriruzzaman Shahin, assistant register of the orthopedics unit, acknowledged that condition of the patient was improving for his orthopedic wounds till May 17 afternoons. But the patient died from Pulmonary Embolism group of diseases malfunctioning his lunch and heart and extreme breathing problems.
Dr. Qamrul Islam Selim, director SBMCH, said denying negligence in treatment said patient or his family members never complained about head injury and doctors forming a medical board detected the cause of death as Pulmonary Embolism group of diseases which has no treatment facility in the hospital.
