Chittagong Bureau :
The Department of Narcotics Control(DNC) , Chittagong has filed a case seven months after seizing 14 lakh contraband yaba tablets from a fishing trawler a t the outer berth of Chittagong Port.
After the seizure of the consignment, the Navy said there were 1.5 million pills in it. After counting, 1.4 million Yaba pills were found.DNC Chittagong Metro Region Supervisor Chowdhury Imrul Hasan filed the case at Patenga Police Station on Wednesday.
Those accused in the case are trawler owner Rajeeb Das, his stepbrother Khokan Das, their agent Jahangir Alam, and helmsman Md Sekandar. All of them are absconding..
Plaintiff Hasan said they had to be certain about the identity of the trawler’s owner, defending the delay in filing the case.A patrol of the Navy’s Anti-smuggling Cell seized the Yaba from the trawler, ‘FB Rajeeb’, at the outer anchorage of the port on Feb 4.They claimed it was the largest Yaba consignment of Bangladesh.Commander SM Atiqur Rahman said they suspected the contraband pills were being smuggled into Bangladesh from a neighbouring country. They handed over the consignment to the DNC and the trawler to the customs authorities.
The DNC investigation found that Rajeeb and Khokan bought the trawler previously named as ‘FB Sumon’ from Banshkhali Upazila’s Durjodhon Das on Aug 23, 2014, and changed the name.On Sep 23 last year, the marine fisheries department impounded the trawler for use of banned net.Rajeeb and Khokan’s agent Jahangir then had it released by paying Tk 30,000 fine on Jan 3 this year.Patenga Police Station OC Alamgir Hossain said the DNC would handle the case.
