BNP candidate for Chandpur-4, Faridganj, Constituency renowned industrialist M A Hannan has fled reportedly away instead of campaigning for himself in his constituency. He hinted about his being aloof from campaigning in his constituency at a rather hurriedly- called press conference held at his own institution ‘ Hannan Complex’ on Haji Mohsin Road in Chandpur district this afternoon. He has told the press men that ‘ our leaders and activists were arrested at dead of night today Tuesday from their homes and so, most of our workers and leaders have fled away fearing ‘Police- arrest / hunt’ after a Police Sub Inspector AK Azad filed a case against/ accusing our one thousand activists and leaders’.
‘In these awkward and abnormal circumstances, we can’t at all participate in this election’. After press conference he did not return to Faridganj to campaign. He has been remaining aloof from campaigning and election activities, let alone his party men.
Contacted, Faridganj Unit of BNP General Secretary Sharif Md Yunus has confirmed the report saying that ‘ Hannan shaheb has left for Dhaka after the press conference. Most of our workers and activists are absconding fearing Police hunt/arrest’.
Contacted, OC Faridganj Thana Harunor Rashid has told this correspondent that a case was filed by Sub Inspector AK Azad on Monday night accusing 150 known activists and about 500 unknown activists and supporters of BNP -jote after a clash between BNP and Police took place on Monday afternoon at Faridganj Moidhdhya Bazar near Police Station during an election showdown by BNP candidate MA Hannan, that left 30 people including four Police men injured. He added, ‘MA Hannan was left out in this case’.
OC again said that ‘so far 19 BNP activists have been arrested from different places since early hours today Tuesday and attempts are on to nab the rest of the accused.’.
Sources have said, MA Hannan has fled away from Faridganj instead of campaigning in his electoral areas thereby he carefully left his party men and supporters in helpless and awkward position and the recently- rejuvenated Upazila party office in a lack lustre and leaderless condition, which is actually a setback in the field of campaigning and public contact in his constituency ahead of the coming national election on 30 December, this is left less than three weeks to hold..
However, his nearest rival candidate is AL and Mohajote candidate renowned journalist Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman-President of the National Press Club, Dhaka has started campaigning with rejuvenated spirits. In Chandpur -IV Constituency, Faridganj, there are a total of 3 lakh 9 thousand and 685 voters , of whom 1 lakh 57 thousand 724 are male voters and the rest 1 lakh 51 thousand 961 are female voters .
