Case, counter case on Birdem incident

A case was filed on Sunday in connection with the death of a patient at Birdem Hospital on April 13, while another case was filed about the assaults on some physicians of the hospital following the death.
Farhana Nasrin, Birdem patient Sirajul Islam’s daughter filed a case with Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court against five physicians of Birdem on Sunday noon. The accused physicians are: Dr Azad, Dr Shamima Akhter, Dr Firoze Amin, Dr Kalyan Debnath and Dr Anwar Hossain.
Meanwhile, Birdem authorities lodged another
case against 29 people, including Additional Police Super of Dhaka ABM Masud Hossain, Mohammad Manik Mollah, Senior Security Supervisor of the Birdem, lodged this case also with the CMM Court of Dhaka in the morning against 29 people, including four named persons.
Of them, three named accused are: Ishaq Hossain Babu, Assistant Personal Secretary (APS) to former State Minister for Labour Begum Munnujan Sufian, Farhana Nasrin, and a resident of Hosni Dalan Road area and Abir Hossain, a student of East West University.
Magistrate Mizanur Rahman of the CMM Court recorded the statements of the complainants in both the cases and ordered a judicial enquiry into the incident.
The court also ordered for submitting reports before it in both the cases within May 28.
Some angry relatives of Sirajul Islam physically assaulted duty doctors and vandalised furniture and windowpanes on the 14th floor of the hospital after the patient died on the night of April 13, alleging negligence of duty by the attending doctors.
A group of the physicians of Birdem went on strike for sine die on April 15 protesting
the incident. Later, the physicians called off their strike on Wednesday evening following the withdrawal of ASP Masud for his alleged involvement in the Birdem incident.
