Advocate sources said police of Dashar police station detained Shahin with his friends Mukit Akon and Shah Alam Chowkidar for alleged suspicious activities instigated by local police source Nazrul Islam Fakir on June 8 night when Shahin was talking with his friends sitting on bridge near his studio on Gournadi-Kalkini upazila border. The three were brought to Dashar police station and SI Nazmul demanded Tk.2 lakhs as bribe to release the three.
Mukit and Shahalam were released after paying Tk 70 thousand as bribe to police and police putting 5 pieces of Yaba in the pocket of Shahin sent him to jail for alleged drug peddling, complainant of the case claimed.
However police tortured Shahin mercilessly for not-giving release money while he was under custody of Dashar PS. Shahin. He was admitted at Madaripur jail hospital and sent to Madaripur Sadar Hospital at 9:00 PM after his condition deteriorated and he succumbed to his injuries at about 9:30 PM June 14 night.
There were injury marks on body of the victim may be caused by beating, Dr. Siddikur Rahman, resident medical officer of Madaripur general hospital told to the family members during handing over the dead body on June 15 afternoon.
Local people Gournadi in Barisal on June 16 afternoon held agitation rally and procession with dead body of Shahin protesting allegedly killing him by police-torture.
Emdadul Huq, officer in charge, SI Nazmul Hasan of Dashar police station, denying demanding any bribe, said the two others arrested with Shahin were released by the recommendation by local elite Syed Babu.
They also denying any torture on Shahin for collecting bribe claimed that Shahin was a drug addicted and drug peddler and died due to withdrawal syndromes from addiction.
