Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has suspended carrying all kinds of passenger vehicles and passengers on ferries.
Only emergency goods carrying vehicles and ambulances will be carried maintaining strict health protocols.
In a press release, the BIWTC said on Friday (July 9) that transporting all kinds of passenger vehicles and passengers on ferries will remain suspended from July 9.
Jahangir Alam Khan, senior public relations officer of the Ministry of Shipping, has also confirmed the matter. He said the BIWTC issued the directive which is scheduled to be implemented from Friday morning.
Earlier on June 30, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority banned movement of all passenger carrying vessels including launches, trawlers and speedboats in the country between July 1 and July 7. The ban was later extended till July 14 amid the ongoing countywide restrictions on public movement and businesses.
The restrictions have almost faltered as people from different districts have started journeying back to their homes ahead of Eid-ul-Azha amid widespread violations and further surge in Covid cases and deaths in Bangladesh. Many of the home-bound people crossed the River Padma by ferries on Thursday from Shimulia to travel to different south-western districts.
