The cultivation of carrot has changed the lot of many farmers in Kaunia upazila under Rangpur district. A large number of farmers in the upazila have been producing carrot commercially during this current season and many of them have already become self reliant.
Moktar Ali, a farmer of Paschim Rajib village in the upazila, said, he cultivated carrot on 25 decimals of land this season under Integrated Agricultural Productivity Project (IAPP), with the assistance of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and has already earned Tk 20,000 from its sale. He is optimistic of achieving more profit during the remaining part of the season.
Jakir Hossain, another farmer of the Nijdarpa village in the upazila said that he cultivated carrot on 20 decimals of land with the assistance of Integrated Agricultural Productivity Project (IAPP). He has so far earned Tk 15,000 and is hopeful to earn more profit. He said, encouraged by their success many farmers of the upazila is showing their interest in carrot cultivation. He hoped that the cultivation of carrot will be increased in the area significantly in coming season.
Kaunia upazila Agriculture Officer said the soil of the upazila is suitable for carrot cultivation. And its cultivation has already financially benefited many farmers of the upazila. Seeing their success a good number of farmers of the upazila has shown their eagerness to cultivate carrot on their lands, he added.
