The West Indies scored 223 for the loss of five wickets in the first innings against Bangladesh on the first day of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Thursday.
The Caribbeans had a good start as openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell put on together 66 runs before Campbell was trapped leg before wicket by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam.
Then right-arm pacer Abu Jayed of the Tigers struck as he bowled out one-down Shayne Moseley just for seven runs when the tourists’ total was 87 for the loss of two wickets.
Opener Kraigg Brathwaite was caught at the first slip by Najmul Hossain Shanto off Soumya Sarkar when the visitors’ score was 104 for the loss of three wickets.
Brathwaite hit a polished 47. His 122-ball innings saw four fours.
Campbell made 36 from 68 balls featuring five fours and a sixer.
After Brathwaite’s dismissal, Abu Jayed hit again as Kyle Mayers (5) was caught at the slip by Soumya Sarkar off the right-arm pacer when the touring side’s total was 116 for the loss of four wickets.
After Kyle’s departure, Nkrumah Bonner and Jermaine Blackwood made a remarkable partnership as they put up 62 runs for the fifth wicket partnership before Blackwood (28) was caught & bowled Taijul Islam when the West Indies’ score was 178 for the loss of five wickets.
After Blackwood’s removal, Bonner and Joshua Da Silva added together 45 runs in the unbroken sixth wicket stand before the bails were drawn for the first day.
Bonner remained unbeaten with 74. He hit six fours in his 173-ball knock.
Joshua remained unbeaten with 22.
Pacer Abu Jayed and Taijul Islam bagged two wickets each at the cost of 46 and 64 runs respectively.
Occasional pacer Soumya Sarkar took one wicket for 30 runs.
