A clinker-laden cargo vessel sank in the Pashur river in Mongla upazila here on Friday.
Mongla port sources the cargo ship, MV Hazra-1, sank in the river near Harbaria around 9:30 due to a crack at its bottom while heading towards Khulna after unloading 600 mts clinker from a Chinese vessel.
Among eight crew of the ship, some managed to swim ashore while the others were rescued by another vessel.
Mongla port authority chairman Commodore H R Bhuiyan said a three-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
