Phulbanu’s (52) husband is living separately with his newly- married- wife and two sons and one daughter . Her suffering started from that period of her life and it was gradually increasing.
She is nurturing his three children by working robust as a maid servant in different rich men’s houses and also earning money by cultivating vegetables and rearing poultry.
Phulbanu’s was struggling with many obstacles, creating by his society. She worked hard and overcome those challenges. She also saved money from her small income and the amount was Tk.500/- . At this stage of her life, she took decision that, she will not continue job as maid servant and visioning to live a decent life: She Phulbanu’s with his goats expecting technical supports on his homestead gardening. In that moment the Community Agriculture Volunteer (CAV) & Field Facilitator Care-Popi-Shouhardo III programme included her name in their Farmers Field & Business School-FFBS.
Phulbanus has learnt different techniques on homestead gardening from FFBS sessions, like preparation and use of Compost, pest management, Mada, rearing of poultry etc. She also learn other livelihood options from the programmes . Rahima Akter, one of the advance leaders (she is the President of Village Development Committee-VDC) of that community, who insisted Phulbanu in continuing his struggle by providing moral and societal support, which was very much effective to achieve her dream. Phulbanu also a VDC general member, which united the poor & extreme poor households and make them self-reliant. After getting adequate mental and technical support from VDC, Phulbanu took decision to buy goat and finally she had it by his saved Tk 500 and Tk 45OO from Shouhardo III program (it’s a grant from program for the improvement of her livelihood). Through her hard work now she is owner of six goats and she has plan to establish a small goat farm in his village. By selling goat she has taken a piece of land (leasing). On the other hand, She is also earning money by cultivating vegetables. Her children are now going to primary school. Not only Phulbanus, there are so many success stories of many poor families of Shebati Village of Dampara Union in Nikli upazila, of Kishoreganj.
A group of journalist of talked to local Shieb Uddin (62) . This distressed man told that he was very much sick and suffering from different diseases. By getting health advices from Popi-Shouhardo III “Programme , he got better treatment from Upazila health & FP Department.
In that time she was failed to decide about his livelihood. With the inspiration of VDC and Shouhardo III programme , he decided, not to depend on the aid of other family members and even his society and he also idolized to earn by himself. Shouhardo III programme included his as a poor members and trained him on Income generating activities category, focused on grocery. With this money and also his saved money he opened his grocery shop nearby his house. With the income of this shop his family is now running better.
Another example of livelihood improvement from the story of Ms. Begum Akter , wife of late Ibrahimt of same village. She is leading her family by rearing duck and chicken. She established a Papaya garden, which is very much profitable. She established it in a fellow land nearby of her residence. She is selling extra Papayas and earning additional income by fulfilling her family needs. One of his son and daughter enrolled in school. She is now empowered in the society and other members of that society are taking advice from her.
Above are the pieces of development evidence, which indicating that, leadership of community, hardship of people and commitment of development actors can turn the Dream of community in true; Shabati is a living example of that.
