Nazrul Islam, Chattogram Bureau :
The treatment of cardiac patients at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) is being hampered for want of machine.
The hospital authority is also in trouble to provide services to cardiac patients with only one eco cardiographs machine.
Hospital authority said, through eco cardiographs machine, the condition of blood circulation and heart of a patient is measured by using ultra sound technology. Generally it is known as eco. The test is quite expensive.
To decide on the necessary action based on the assessment of cardiac patient’s present condition, the test is done.
Besides, the development of patients suffering from cardiac bulb related complexities and post operative condition of a patient is assessed through the test. In the past there were three eco cardiograph machines at CMCH for conducting the important test but two of those broke down long ago.
The only one remaining in service to provide test to the patients. As a result, the patients are going through untold sufferings.
According to hospital insiders, a total of around 55-60 patients are being tested daily. Out of those, around 35-40 are from cardiology Department. The rest are referred from other departments. But due only one machine, many cannot take the test at CMCH. Those who insist on doing the test as the hospital have to wait 15 to 20 days and even a month. As a result majority of the patients have to take expensive test in private hospitals.
Titu Das, a resident of Battery Goli said, “A few days ago, I went to the outdoor of cardiology department of CMCH as I was suffering from heartache. Doctor asked me to test ECO”. When he went to CMCH for the test, he was told that he have to wait for at least a month as many patients before him are awaiting their turn to take the test. As Titu had no other option had to take the test at a private hospital. It cost him tk1400. In contrast, at CMCH the same ECO test costs Tk200. Admitting the scarcity of ECO machine, Dr Rezwan Rehan, Assistant Professor of Cardiology Department of CMCH said, when there were three machine we could easily provide service to the patients. But now there is only one machine.
With the only one machine we have to serve around 60 patients daily. The machine becomes hot if more than 20 ECO test is done at a stretch. So we have to give a pause after every 20 test. As a result we can not provide service to all despite having sincere efforts.
We usually emphasis on the patients from cardiology department in providing service. Patients of other departments sometimes have to keep waiting”. He hoped the sufferings will end with the arrival of new machines.
CMCH Deputy Director Dr Aktarul Islam said, the relevant office is informed about the scarcity of ECO machine. New machine will come soon. Then we will be able to serve more patients with ECO test.
