Speakers at a workshop on Saturday underscored the need for taking steps to flourish the capital market saying that only 10 percent capital comes from the stock market while the banking sector provides 90 percent.
They said it is not a good sign for the economy because banks provide long-term loans by taking short-term deposits. It is risky for the economy and the country needs to change this trend for the sake of sustainable development, they added.
Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) Society and Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) jointly organized the workshop with CFA society president Shahidul Islam in the chair.
Adviser of the former caretaker government Dr AB Mirza Azizul Islam attended it chief guest while Prof Lutfi Siddique of London School of Economics and Political Science, Arif Khan of IDLC Finance, ERF general secretary Md Ziaur Rahman and CFA’s Bangladesh Vice-president Moniruzzaman spoke at the workshop.
Mirza Aziz said the capital market is very small comparing to the size of the country’s economy. But it must be flourished for the sake of the sustainable development of the country, he said, adding that if the capital market is flourished, the lion portion of the country will come from it.
