Expressing solidarity with demands of flashflood victims of haor regions, President M Abdul Hamid has said capital dredging of rivers coming from across the border to Bhairab is essential to ensure proper navigability to save haors from flashfloods.
“Capital dredging system of the rivers is a must to save the haor areas from inundation . . . Besides, the construction of sustainable submerged embankment is mandatory in this regard,” he told a view-exchange meeting with local elected representatives, senior citizens, professionals, academics, freedom fighters and government officials at Zila Parisahd auditorium here on Monday night.
Voicing concern over the early flashflood in Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, Netrakona and other haor areas due to onrush of waters from Indian hills, the President said, “Being an inhabitant of haor and also a son of farmer, I am very much anxious about the situation and we need a permanent solution in this regard.” President Hamid said.
He said, “I have already talked to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who already assured me of providing necessary assistances in this regard.”
The affected farmers will be provided with assistance until the next Boro season, the President said.
Referring to his limitations, he said, “I’m your man as well as the President of the whole country …. So I have to think about all citizens.
But being your son I will definitely look at the matter seriously and also take realistic and pragmatic steps in consultations with all the ministries concerned.”
President Hamid gave the flashflood victims a patient hearing and assured them of taking necessary measures to overcome the situation after consultations with the concerned ministries specially the prime minister immediately.
He also stressed combined efforts of affluent and local leaders to overcome the situation collectively.
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan, lawmakers – Muhibur Rahman Manik, Engineer Moazzem Hossain Ratan, Rezwan Ahmed Toufiq, Peer Fazlur Rahman, Advocate Shamsunnahar Rabbani, Dr Joya Sen Gupta and Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, among others, spoke on the occasion. Earlier, the President held a view-exchange meeting with the leaders of the Sunamganj district lawyers association and also visited the Sunamganj Oitijya Jadhughar (Sunamganj Heritages Museum).
President Abdul Hamid also held a meeting with freedom fighters and his fellow war field fighters of Sunamganj during the 1971 Liberation War in the early hours of Tuesday.
The President called upon them to gear up the present government’s development activities and disseminate the real history of the War of Liberation to the new generation.
