Potential candidates are now busy in meeting to make election tactic with grassroots leader and activists. They are joining in various gatherings including social and religious functions to influence the local voters.
A dozen of leaders and workers are active in election field supporting their preferred candidate. This electoral seat consists of whole Belkuchi and 13 unions including 1 municipality of Chawhali Upazila. There is no single party domination in this constituency.
Shahidulla Khan of the BNP won the first parliamentary election from this constituency, especially after the change of 90’s plot. In 1996, Abdul Latif Biswas, of AL won the victory. BNP’s candidate Justice Mozammel Haq became winner in 2001 election. AL’s Latif Biswas won again in 2008. Last in 2014, Abdul Mazid Mondol won the election from this constituency.
In addition to present MP Mazid Mondol, Abdul Latif Biswas, former minister, Mohamad Ali, Upazila Porishod chairman, Mir Mosharaf Hossain and Mushfikur Rahman Mohan are also the AL’s candidates hoping for nomination.
On the other hand, the probable candidates of BNP who are hoping nomination are-Humayun Islam, Amirul Islam, Golam Mawla Khan and Rakibul KArim Pappu. Besides, Ali Alom, leader of Jammat may want nomination from this electoral seat. There are internal conflicts between AL and BNP leader in this seat that is also affecting the political activates of grassroots leaders and workers extremely shoddily.
Although present MP Abdul Mazid Mondol, President of Enayetpur thana AL and Chairman of Mandal group is a very gentleman, he is totally new to the field of politics. Apart from being physically ill, local activists of the party are disturbed by his activites. As a result many leaders and workers are turning away from him. Realizing the matter Mazid Mandal wants to bring his son, Momin Mondol to politics. He tried to introduce his son differently to several local events.
Another AL candidate hoping for nomination from this constituency is Abdul Latif Biswas. At first he was elected chairman of UP and latter chairman of Upazila. Presently he is the Chairman of Sirajganj district council and the president of district AL. Former Fisheries and Livestock Minister Latif Biswas denied the internal conflict and said that he was directly involved with grassroots politics. During the time of the minister, I did extensive development work he also added. If I receive the nomination again, then I will complete the unfinished development work and modernize Belkuchi. I will save Chowhali upazila from the aggression of river Jamuna and give it new-fangled contour with modern amenities.
Mohammad Ali says that, I’m going to organize the party here with reliability and trying to materialize the vision 2041 that was taken by PM Sheikh Hasina. Belkuchi upazila has earned a reputation in the local government ministry’s survey. In JICA’s survey, Belkuchi also has taken place in 100 upazilas. As a popularly-renowned leader at the local level he said that if I get nomination in the next election, my victory is certain and I will be able to work with huge enthusiasm.
Mosharaof Hossian, another candidate is supporting the helpless people with the hope of getting nomination. He says that, I have been working for the welfare of the people for a long period of time. Since I have intimate relation with grassroots, I expect the nomination for the nest election.
Mushfiqur Rahman, Sports Secretary of Jubo League says, I have been working for the welfare of the local people for 25 years. Since Mazid Mandol is sick and Latif Biswas is controversial, people here are expecting new leadership.
Meanwhile, BNP’s candidates did not have a strong role in the movement and organizational programs regarding forthcoming election, rather they are spending busy time by criticizing each other. In particular, they did not have any special role in the movement for the release of party’s chairperson Khaleda Zia. Former BNP secretary general Humayun Islam, who is expecting BNP’s nomination, has been in touch with local leaders and workers. He says about the party’s dispute, since BNP is a big party, there are several candidates. If I get nomination, I will be victorious definitely. Golam Mawola, advisor of Belkuchi upazila BNP says with optimism regarding nomination in upcoming election that I have kept a warm touch with party’s leaders and high command and I will be easily able to retrieve this seat if I get nomination.
Rakibul Karim, another candidate of BNP hoping for nomination says that that is no division in the party and I am working with the leaders and workers in election field. Talking about election with Amirul Islam, former general secretary of central chhatra Dal says, we are continuously campaigning through domestic meetings and various programs to get nomination and my victory is sure in the coming 11th parliamentary election.
