Cancellation of Nat’l Broadcast Policy demanded

Teachers and staff of Rajshahi University (RU) formed a human chain Saturday on the campus in a protest of newly approved National Broadcasting Policy 2014 and Israel’s heinous attack on Gaza.They demanded the cancellation of the National Broadcasting Policy saying that it has been formulated to gag the voice of media.
On Sunday, at 11:00am over hundred teachers and staffs of the university under the banner of “Nationalist Teachers Forum” staged a human chain in front of the senate bhabon on campus to press home their demands.
Speakers at a human chain alleged that the government with an evil motive is trying to establish its absolute control over the media.
They also, terming the policy as a “Broadcasting control and Suppression Policy”, told that the commission which is given unlimited power to control the media would be used as dangerous weapon of snatching press freedom.
The speakers also protested and condemned Israel’s brutality and demanded a stop to the military raids on Gaza.
Among others, convener of Nationalist Teachers Forum, Prof Rafiqul Alam, teacher of the university Prof Dr Sahadat Hossain, Prof Mayenuddin, Prof Mahbubur Rahman, Prof CM Mostafa were present at human chain.
Barisal Correspondent adds : Barisal Reporters Unity (BRU) holding its 14th annual general meeting at its premises on Saturday demanded enacting national broadcasting policy to law only after forming independent broadcasting commission with representatives from all sector of mass media and taking mass consent.
They demanded cancellation of declaration and licenses of print, electronic and online media in failure of implementing wage board outside Dhaka city.
They also demanded assurances of freedom of expressions by expanding accountability and transparency in mass media and end of all suppression and oppression against media activists.
The AGM of BRU was presided over by Nazrul Biswas, president, and general report was placed by Bappi Majumdar, secretary and audit report by Qamrul Islam, finance secretary.
