Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism A K M Shahjahan Kamal visited Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday and participated in a view exchange meeting with local elite on controversial Public Private Partnership ( PPP) agreement regarding 130 acres of land including Motel Shoibal with Orion Group.
The local leaders demanded cancellation of lease agreement on Motel Shoibal with Orion Tourism and Entertainment Limited, a sister concern of Orion Group.
On the demand of cancellation of PPP lease agreement, the Minister said , Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will take final decision in this regard.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Shahjahan Kamal directed the authority concerned to formulate a mega plan for building Cox’s Bazar, the beach town of the country, as a modern tourism city.
“I would like to turn Cox’s Bazaar into a modern tourism city,” he said while speaking at a view-exchange discussion at the conference room of district administration.
The minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken a number of mega projects for further development of Cox’s Bazar including upgrading the local airport to international standard and extending rail link to the beach city. “After implementing these projects, the country’s tourism industry will get a big boost,” he said.
The minister said the development projects will be implemented after securing interests of the local habitants. “We are aware so that local people won’t be affected by the development endeavors,” he said.
Presided over by deputy district commissioner of Cox’s Bazar M Ali Hossain, the meeting was also addressed by Members of Parliament Saimum Sarwar Komol and Asheq Ullah Rafiq and Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary S M Ghulam Farooque, among others.
