Canal excavation, sewerage cleaning continue in Barishal

A month-long mass canal excavation and cleaning of sewerage and sanitation operation have been continued in full suing by Barisal City Corporation (BCC).
Serniabad Sadik Abdullah, BCC mayor, said that there was massive water logging in Barishal City previous years. So we are keeping the canals clean in advance to avoid sufferings of the people from water logging during the upcoming monsoon season. It has been funded from BCC own sources.
Dr. Rabiul Islam, conservancy officer of BCC and in charge of massive operation, said all obstacles of the city canals would be removed and some portion would be re-excavated through this operation.
We are going to clean all drains and make at lest 5/6 feet depth of all major canals flowing inside the city area and recover grabbed portions of the canals’ he added.
BCC sources said the clean-up program was inaugurated on April 26, at Chaumatha point of Nabgram canal by BCC mayor Serniabad Sadik Abdullah.
The BCC authorities said that in order to prevent water logging in the city during upcoming monsoon season, this program has been taken to restore and clean the canals flowing and sewerage drains inside the city.
The cleaning operation will be carried out in the five main canals of the city including Lakutia Canal, Jail Canal, Amanatganj Canal, Sagardi Canal and Nabagram canal of the city by removing main obstacles and re-excavation. Barishal City Corporation Conservancy Officer Dr. Rabiul Islam further said that in earlier land- survey, total 46 canals were supposed to exist under Barishal City Corporation but at least half of them have been lost due to grabbing and pollution in different period. Although a project has been given by Barishal City Corporation to beautify and restore, rescue the canals two years ago, but so far this proposal has not been approved by concerned ministry, BCC official told.
According to a BCC source, the project was revised and re-submitted over one year with estimated costing of around Tk 2,700 core, but that is still pending with the local government ministry. Mostafa Zaman, personal secretary of BCC Mayor, said, we will clean and bring back the flow of canals and drains before monsoon starts.
