Barishal City Corporation on Monday (26 April) started a month-long drive to reduce water logging and ease sewerage systems by cleaning canals and evicting illegal encroaches.
The operation has been started from the Nabagram -Cjowmatha point of the city at 11:00 AM by BCC mayor in presence of the officials of BCC and district administration including Jasimuddin Haider, deputy commissioner, magistrates, ward councillors.
BCC authorities said the operation of recovering city canals were started to prevent water logging in the city during the coming monsoon season.
This program was also taken to free the canal banks from the enchrocers and restore and clean the canals flow making the sewerage systems of city easier.
This programme of cleaning will be carried out in the main canals of the city including Lakutia Canal, Jail Canal, Amanatganj Canal and Sagardi Canal of the City and their branches.
Barishal City Corporation Conservancy Officer Dr. Rabiul Islam said that earlier in the survey 46 canals were supposed to exist under Barisal City Corporation but at least half of them have been lost due to grabbing land and pollution.
Although a project has been given since last two years in the imitative of Barisal City Corporation to beautify and restore after rescuing these canals banks by constructing walkways. But so far this proposal has not yet been approved by concerned ministry.
According to a BCC source, the project was revised and re-submitted over one year around Tk 2,700 crore, but is still pending with the local government ministry.
Mostafa Zaman, the mayor’s personal officer, said: we will clean and bring back the flow of canals and drains of the city.
Serniabad Sadik Abdullah, BCC mayor, said that there was a massive water logging in Barishal City last year. We are keeping the canals clean in advance so that the people do not suffer due to water logging during the up coming monsoon season. It has been funded from the BCC’s own funds.
