Commentary: Can people say they have a govt and police to protect them?

A ghastly gang rape that included police officer also reported in the media is so shocking that one has to believe-the country is completely in the hands of lawless elements. The terrible lawlessness incident took place in Faridganj upazila on Wednesday when a hearing impaired teenage girl was sexually abused by a gang of young ones repeatedly as if there is no government and no police for rapists to worry about. Involvement of a police in the crime makes that clear.
It is incredible that a group of locally powerful people meanwhile attempted to use their power to resolve the issue for avoiding police case. But police intervention foiled it so the report says. The victim’s brave mother lodged the case.
As it appears that such mindless rapes are making lives of women, particularly young girls unprotected throughout the country.
Rapists are at large all over emboldened by their political ties to ruling party men. We have law and police but lawlessness has made police almost irrelevant. It is a shame that police also become party to such gang rape and other crimes.
In another reported incident said a man raped his 12-year-old speech-impaired niece in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria district recently. The offender is a cousin of victim’s mother who picked up her while she was going to a neighbour’s house to deliver some vegetables. The man took the girl to a deserted place and locals rescued her hearing her scream. In another case a man raped an indigenous physically-challenged woman in Kaptai upazila to show how women are highly vulnerable all over. A man also recently raped two minor sisters at Siddhirganj as they were returning home from work place in late evening.
On 14 this month, two people were held in connection with the gang-rape of a teenager in Lalmonirhat’s Sadar upazila. The girl was gang-raped in a house near the toll plaza of Teesta Road Bridge. On receiving information from locals, police raided the house and rescued the girl and arrested the two alleged rapists.
On 15 December 2020, a teenager was brutally raped while her parents helplessly watched in Lakshmipur. Miraj Hossain, the main accused in a case over the gang-rape has been placed on four-day remand. In another incident, a woman was raped reportedly by four men as she refused the proposal of getting into sex work in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila.
This is a total lawlessness and how can the people claim they have government or police to protect them? Plundering and lying with no sense of shame for failures is the government. The saddest thing is that the people’s public servants or the people’s police have nearly forgotten their obligation to the people. It is their shame and ungratefulness and the nation’s worst misfortune.
