The first one-day international between visiting Bangladesh and hosts South Africa will be held today. In view of the dismal performance in the Test series, none will think of a victory for the visitors. But it can be done. We may name Pakistan as an example of such win. They handed Sri Lanka an 83 runs triumph in the first ODI in Abu Dhabi on Friday. Pakistan outplayed the island nation in every department of cricket. So, if Pakistan can do, why will not Bangladesh be able against South Africa?
What we need from the Bangladeshi players are physical fitness, conviction and concentration of mind on the pitch. A player who does not have these qualities, he cannot deliver result as happened to both Bangladesh and Pakistan in the Test series. And those who have can do as did Argentina against Ecuador in the World Cup Qualification match last Wednesday, or as Japan produced against highest four times World Champions Pakistan in the Asia Cup Hockey on Friday.
These are being referred as examples to stimulate our players so that we can see a Bangladesh victory in the first ODI against South Africa. In this connection, we like to add that cricket is not football that the coach will enjoy more powers than the captain. In cricket, captain takes instant decision during play and so none can influence him from outside. If the captain is independent, Bangladesh may win the first ODI.
