Hundreds of students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have taken a mass oath to uproot terror activities from the campus.
Amid the taking of the oath, the BUET students formally ended their demonstration. But they are committed to realise their 10-point demands for their safety.
Rafia Rizwana, a second year student of Mechanical Engineering Department, conducted the oath taking ceremony at BUET Auditorium on Wednesday.
Before taking the oath, the teachers and students observed a one-minute silent remembering Abrar Fahad.
A representative of the protesters said they had received a notice from BUET about the suspension of the students accused of killing Abrar and also assurance from the authority of the university that they would be expelled if found guilty.
BUET Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Saiful Islam, Acting Director of Directorate of Student’s Welfare (DSW) Prof Dr Mohammed Abdul Bashit and provosts of all eight halls and faculty deans took the oath along with the students, but the teachers did not take part in the oath talking ceremony.
On Tuesday evening, the students held a press briefing in front of the BUET Shaheed Minar after calling off their protest and made an announcement to take a mass oath.
They have been protesting since October 7 seeking justice for Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of the BUET Electrical and Electronic Engineering department was beaten to death by Chhatra League leaders inside the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of the day.
The students have called off the protest, but refused to attend any academic activities as long as the suspects of Abrar Fahad murders are not expelled from the university.
The protest has been suspended as the students found law enforcement agencies and BUET Administration taking necessary steps to meet the 10-point demands placed by the protesters.
On October 11, the Vice-Chancellor announced a ban on student politics on the campus. Till date 20 people have been arrested in connection to Abrar’s murder.
