Election campaign in five unions of Kotchandpur Upazila in Jhenaidah has got momentum ahead of the election scheduled to be held on March 22 this year.
The candidates and their near and dear ones have been moving door to door of the voters to cast their votes favouring their own candidates.
Kotchandpur, the 165.66 squre kilometre area upazila is the smallest among five other unions of the district situated 35 kilometre west from the district head quarters. The upazila (then police station) was established in 1883 turned to upazila( upgrade police station) in 1983 after 101 years of its establishment. It was formed with a municipality and five unions with 79 villages.
Kashem Ali, a voter of Kushna Union when contacted said, the candidates who were not residing in the locality appearing in their area sudden to participate in the union parishad elections scheduled to be held on March 22.
They have been moving even in the houses of unknown people identifying themselves as their near and dear ones.
Dipak Kumar, a voter of Dora union said, the respect of the people in their area was increased following the union parsihad election. The rural people are appreciated highly by the vote seeking people, Dipak said. Upazila Election Officer Mahmudur Rahman said, 26 aspirants have submitted nominations for the chairmanship and 175 for the ward member positions, while 45 submitted nominations for 15 seats in the upazila.
The Election Commission (EC) sources said, 16,506 voters including 8,185 female voters in Safderpur union. Four intending candidates are Awami League backed Nowser Ali, BNP backed Mijanur Rahman Khan, Independent candidates Golam Mstafa and Belayet Hossain. 15,976 voters including 7,903 female voters will cast their votes in Dora union. Five intending candidates are AL backed Kabil Uddin Biswas, BNP- backed Manirul Islam, Jamaat= backed Abdur Razzaque Khan, independent candidates Manik Mia and Jahidul Islam.
Some 18,942 voters including 9,452 female voters are going to cast their votes in Kushna union. Seven competitors are Liakat Hossain from the BNP, Abdul Hannan from ruling AL, independent candidates Zulfiker Ali, Sharifur Rahman Tito, Waheduzzaman, Atiar Rahman and KM Helaring.
There are 15,596 voters including 7,903 female in Baluhar UP . Seven candidates are contesting in the election. They are Abdul Matin for ruling AL, Rafiqul Islam from the BNP, Shah Alam from Jamaat, independent candidates Abul Kalam Azad, Saidur Rahman, Shahjahan Ali and Shariful Islam.
