Munshiganj Correspondent :
Two rebel mayoral candidates in two municipalities here- Munshiganj and Mirkadim are running their election campaign without any barrier. But, BNP-backed candidate AKM Iradat Manu and his supporters alleged that ruling party leaders and activists were creating obstacles in the campaigns. In 95 per cent areas of Munshiganj Municipality, no posters of ‘dhaner shish’ (paddy sheaf) were noticed, but those of ‘boat’ have overwhelmed the areas.
In Mirkadim Municipality, independent candidate and Education and Human Resource Secretary of district AL Mansur Ahmed Kalam is contesting with ‘mobile phone’ symbol since he did not get nomination from Awami League. He was former vice-chairman of Sadar upazila parishad. Mayor Shahidul Islam Shahin, who joined AL only three months ago, secured nomination by managing President of district AL Md Mohiuddin, General Secretary Sheikh Lutfor Rahman and local lawmaker Mrinal Kanti Das, Mansur alleged.
He further said, he has been in AL politics for the last 40 years but the nomination was given to comparatively new Awami Leaguer Shahidul Islam Shahin. He further alleged that the election may not be fair since the AL candidate is threatening to conclude the voting within 11am on the election day. He claimed that he would get 60 per cent votes if it is held in as free and fair environment.
In Munshiganj Municipality, Rezaul Islam Sangram (independent) is contesting with ‘mobile phone’ symbol. He is member of municipal AL’s advisory committee and also president of the district chapter of ‘Amra Muktijoddhar Santan’. Here, Haji Faisal Biplob, son of district AL President Md Mohiuddin, got nomination from AL. AL leader Md Mohiuddin and independent candidate Rezaul Islam Sangram are relatives. Rezaul Islam Sangram said, “I am facing no obstacle in campaigns but my supporters are. If the government wants, the election will be fair. During the first hour of voting, poll centres may be occupied. I hope to win if the election is held free and without bias.”
