Former British Prime Minister David Cameron is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today on a brief visit.
Cameron is arriving in Bangladesh at the invitation of a non-government organisation (NGO). He will leave Dhaka on Thursday in less than 24-hour stay, Diplomatic sources said.
“Bangladesh High Commission in London received a letter from his (Cameron) private secretary a week ago where he expressed his desire to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during
his visit. And the meeting has been scheduled,” Foreign Ministry sources said.
Initially, his visit was planned for four days, but that has been cut short apparently due to the upcoming UK elections for June 8.
It is mentionable that British Prime Minister Theresa May requested the Queen for a general election for June 8, amid polls that indicates she could win a huge majority in the Parliament.
During his visit, Cameron will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He will take a look at a DFID (Department for International Development) project in Dhaka and attend a roundtable of the International Growth Centre.
The Centre is based in the London School of Economics and in partnership with the University of Oxford it works to promote sustainable growth in developing countries, based on high quality research.
Cameron is the Chairman of a commission which was launched in March under this Growth Centre. It has an office in Dhaka.
David Cameron was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2010 to 2016. He resigned last year after the BREXIT voting, bringing an abrupt end to his premiership, after the British people took the momentous decision to reject his entreaties and showed their back to the European Union.
