Calls for waging social movement against cancer

Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali called for waging a vigorous social movement against fatal disease cancer.
Cancer could be prevented by discarding tobacco and changing life style and food habit, he said this on Tuesday while speaking as the chief guest at the 25th annual general meeting of Bangladesh Cancer Society and World Cancer Day at the society’s central office at Mirpur Darussalam Road in the city. The minister assured the organizers of all assistance from the government to establish a cancer hospital and welfare home. Bangladesh Cancer Society President Prof Dr. Mollah Obaidullah Baki presided over the meeting. Bangladesh Cancer Society and Bangladesh Cancer Hospital and Welfare Home jointly organized the discussion meeting. State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jahid Malek, National Professor Brig (Retd) Dr. M A Malek, Aslamul Haq, MP, Dr. Enamur Rahman, MP, and Dhaka Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sheikh M Yusuf Harun addressed the meeting as the special guests. Prof. Dr. Sheikh Golam Mostafa, who also addressed the meeting, said cancer is a fatal disease.
Like in other countries, thousands of people die of this disease in Bangladesh, he said, adding that cancer could be prevented by following some guidelines. State Minister Jahid Malik said about 2 lakh people are infected with cancer every year and 12 lakh people die of this disease.
The prevalence of cancer in increasing every year, he said and observed that cancer could be prevented by changing life style.
The speakers said cancer could be cured through proper treatment, if it is detected at the right time. Earlier, a colourful rally was brought out with participation of people from all strata. From the rally, leaflets were distributed for creating awareness to build a cancer-free society.
