Eighty percent of the country’s agricultural products are imported and exported through Chittagong port. Therefore, the speakers commented that it is important to set up an international standard agricultural products laboratory in Chittagong.
The speakers made the remarks at a consultative meeting held at the Chittagong Port Plant Quarantine Office on Wednesday last at the initiative of the United Nations Department of Food and Agriculture (FAO) and Agricultural Extension.
The consultative meeting was organized on setting up of international standard laboratories for import and export of agricultural products and construction of packing houses. Mofazzal Karim, Additional Director, Department of Agricultural Extension, Chittagong Region, and FAO Officer Mr. Bennett, Dr. Ashish Ratan Sen, Deputy Director of DAE Rita Dey, Deputy Director of Plant Quarantine Center Nasiruddin including business leaders were present.
The speakers further said that the FAO and the government have decided to set up an international standard agricultural products laboratory and packing house on a two acre site in the eastern part of Dhaka. This is a landmark step, no matter where the laboratory is set up.
Later such labs will also be set up in Chittagong. This is important for an agricultural country. This will benefit the agriculture and farmers of the country.
