Call to make UDCs more effective, popular

Speakers at a post-rally discussion urged the entrepreneurs of the Union Digital Centers (UDCs) to put in their best efforts to make the UDCs more popular and dynamic so that they can earn more through providing services to the grassroots people.
Terming them as worthy citizens they mentioned if they can earn a lot of money they would be rewarded for it as the people would get information services through them. District Administration organized the discussion yesterday at Shilpakala Academy auditorium marking the celebration of the fifth founding anniversary of Digital Center. Access to Information (A2I) Programme of Prime Minister’s Office supported the event in collaboration with USAID and UNDP.
Kabir Bin Anwar, Director General (Administration) of Prime Minister’s Office and Project Director of A2I Programme, attended and addressed the discussion as chief guest with Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi, in the chair.
Additional Commissioner (Revenue) of Rajshahi division Sultan Abdul Hamid, Deputy Director of Local Government Division Dr Dewan Shahriar Firoj and Director of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sekendar Ali spoke as special guests.
In the meeting, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Aktarun Nahar, Upazila Chairman Jakirul Islam and UDC Entrepreneur Towhidul Islam shared experience of their field level activities.
Chief Guest Kabir Anwar says Bangladesh has been experiencing a boom in ICT sectors now a day. He detailed the objectives, implementation strategy and status of the programme and said the major objectives of the process are to provide people with all necessary services at their doorsteps, ensuring accountability and transparency towards establishing a knowledge-based society and good governance. The grassroots people are getting their information related necessary services from the digital centers being operated in Union Parishad Complex.
‘Digital Bangladesh’ was one of the major election pledges of the present government. As part of the fulfillment of this pledge the government has established 4516 UDCs under A2I programme and providing necessary ICT services at the grass root level of the local administration of the country, he added.
